The “law” part of this title is embodied in the text of the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution. An extract of that amendment and commentary about it (by Chief Justice Earl Warren) are integrated with the images of contemporary corrections. Each element was chosen for its linear properties — open-leaded type, cell bars, shadow lines, vertical silhouette, diagonal chain links — so that the montage as a whole would evoke confinement without sacrificing lightness.
